Learn AI by Building AI!

Welcome! In this course, you'll discover how AI works by creating your very own AI classifier app β€” no coding needed! You'll train a machine to recognise things, plan a cool project, and share it with your classmates.

This course has three parts:

What you'll use:

πŸ“š Lessons 1–2: Learn the Basics & Plan Your Project

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Teacher Notes

  • In these lessons, students find out that AI comes in many forms and is already part of daily life. In the second half, they get hands-on with the Teachable Machine and begin planning their projects.
  • Students will watch a video about AI, fill in worksheet tasks, learn how the Teachable Machine works, and start brainstorming their project ideas.
  • Hand out the worksheets on paper, or share them through Google Classroom / Microsoft Teams.
  • Just follow the steps below β€” you've got this!

Worksheets for this lesson:

  • πŸ“„ Worksheet 1: AI in Everyday Life
  • πŸ“„ Worksheet 2: Planning and Development

1. What Are AI and Classifiers?

Did you know that AI isn't just about chatbots and image generators? AI is already helping out in tons of everyday situations β€” from sorting your email to recognising faces in photos!

A classifier is a type of AI that looks at something (like a picture or a sound) and decides which group it belongs to. For example, a classifier could look at a photo and say "that's a cat" or "that's a dog."

To teach a classifier, you give it lots of examples β€” this is called training data. The more good examples you give it, the better it gets at making the right choice!

🎬 Watch the Video

Your teacher will play a short video that explains how classifiers and data work together.

✏️ Tasks

Think about it: After watching the video, what did you learn about classifiers? What about data?

Study Worksheet 1: Look at the questions in "AI in Everyday Life" and think about your answers.

Complete Worksheet 1: Fill in both tasks on the worksheet.

2. Try the Teachable Machine!

🎬 Watch the Demo Video

Your teacher will show a quick video about how to use the Generation AI Teachable Machine.

Open the Teachable Machine: https://classifier-unit.pages.dev/

For your first try, make a simple classifier with just 2 or 3 categories. Don't worry about making it perfect β€” the goal is to learn how the tool works. You should be able to finish in about 30 minutes.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Teacher Notes

  • Remind students to save their projects by clicking "Save" at the top. This downloads a zip file to their computer.
  • To reopen a project later, go back to classifier-unit.pages.dev, click "Open", and select the zip file.
  • The tool is privacy-friendly β€” it doesn't store any student data on external servers.
  • If there's extra time, students can start planning their real project using Worksheet 2.

πŸ› οΈ Lessons 3–4: Build Your Project

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Teacher Notes

  • In these lessons, students design and build their classifier app projects using the Teachable Machine.
  • They'll continue planning, develop their projects, and start preparing their presentations.
  • Hand out worksheets on paper or share via Google Classroom / Microsoft Teams.
  • Follow the steps and it will go smoothly!

Worksheets for this lesson:

  • πŸ“„ Worksheet 2: Planning and Development
  • πŸ“„ Worksheet 3: Presentation

1. Plan Your Classifier App

Now it's time to plan and build something awesome! The goal is to create a classifier app that solves a real problem. Here are some fun ideas to inspire you:

  • πŸ”Ί Little kids are learning shapes β†’ Build a classifier that recognises triangles, squares, and circles, and says the shape's name out loud!
  • πŸ§₯ Younger students need help getting dressed for outside β†’ Build a classifier that spots different clothes and tells them what to do with each piece!
  • ⚽ Nobody knows famous football celebrations β†’ Build a classifier that matches a pose to the right football player!
  • πŸ’ͺ Everyone needs more encouragement β†’ Build a classifier that says "Have a great day, you can do it!" when it sees someone walk by!

✏️ Tasks

Complete Worksheet 2 (Tasks 1–3): Fill in the planning section of "Planning and Development."

Start building! Follow your plan and collect training data for your classifier.

⚠️ Remember to save your project regularly so you don't lose your work!

2. Develop and Improve

✏️ Tasks

Continue Worksheet 2 (Tasks 4–5): Once you've collected training data and clicked "Train Classifier," test how well it works and fill in tasks 4–5.

Keep improving your classifier until it works well!

⚠️ Remember to save your project regularly!

Continue Worksheet 2 (Tasks 6–7): When your classifier is working nicely, plan what actions it should take (task 6). Then do a final check on how well everything works (task 7).

⚠️ Save again!

3. Get Ready to Present

✏️ Tasks

Fill out Worksheet 3: When your app is done and you have extra time, complete all tasks in "Presentation."

Start thinking: What do you want to show your classmates? How will you demonstrate your app?

🎀 Lessons 5–6: Share & Reflect

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Teacher Notes

  • In these final lessons, students present their projects and think about how AI affects the world around them.
  • Students can work alone or in groups of 2–3.
  • Hand out worksheets on paper or through Google Classroom / Microsoft Teams.

Worksheets for this lesson:

  • πŸ“„ Worksheet 4: Impact of AI

Fun idea β€” AI App Exhibition! πŸŽͺ Have each team leave their app running on a computer with short instructions for visitors. Place an empty paper next to each app where others can write one nice comment and one suggestion for improvement. You could even invite other classes to visit!

1. Present Your Work

✏️ Tasks

Finish Worksheet 3: Complete all tasks in "Presentation" and get ready to show your app to the class.

Present your project! Show everyone what you built and how it works.

🎬 Watch the Video

Your teacher will play a video about how AI systems can affect people and society.

2. Think About AI's Impact

✏️ Tasks

Read Worksheet 4: Look at the tasks in "Impact of AI."

Your job is to connect what you learned from building your classifier with the video, and think about how AI affects your everyday digital life.

Complete Worksheet 4: Take 10–15 minutes to fill in all the tasks.

Group Discussion: Chat with 3–4 classmates about your answers. What did you all think?

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations!

You've completed the AI Classifier learning module! You now know how to train an AI, plan an app, and think critically about how AI affects the world. Great job!
